Full Version: dont take out anger on telephone reps

why is it that every time someone gets called they get pissed at the rep that made the call? well its not actually the rep that made the call. it's actually a automated dialer that just happened to connect you to the rep. as a rep myself i get tired of people taking out their anger on me when in reality it's a chosen company that they do business with that is who should feel the brunt of the anger. the next time you get a call that you don't want, if you are simply civil with the rep it will get you a lot farther then getting pissed at them. then take the issue up with the affinity that you do business with that had them make the call. just a thought from a telemarketer.

It really doesn't make sense to show a lot of emotion when you get called, just ask them to take you off their list, put you on their do-not-call list, however you want to phrase it.

Stay calm and you will get what you want, which is not to get called by them again. Get excited and you risk standing out as someone who is fun to play with.

Now, if you actually like being called back 5 or 6 times a day, then by all means go crazy when they call.

I'm NOT defending their behavior by any means, but it's equally stupid for you to behave in a way that encourages them to have fun by annoying you. Just don't play their game and they will go away.

in response to guest, I've been in the business for almost 3 years now so i think i can take it. I'm just tired of peoples shit like yourself, and if shit happened and you had to have a job then you do what you have to including telemarketing. to omnedon, thanks for pointing all that out. its much better to handle it the way you have layed out instead of going nuts. its time for everyone to realize the magical national do not call list doesn't do what most people thinks it does. go back and read it just for reference and youll find something new all the time. i know i do. thanks to all nice people who are civil on the phone.

I got a new phone number and all these people are calling me i continure to trell them nicly not to call me but they call me four five six some of them even seven times a day. I got tired of it after a few weeks of my phone ringing untill 9 pm some times and i started to scream at them and call them mother f-ers and they started to stop calling slowly but surely now it is only a couple of them and it is only a couple of times a week. So scream into the phone all you want. A old lady told me once to go to wal mart and buy a whisle and blow it into the phone they do stop calling when you do that. It is not their job to ruin your life it is thier job to call you once ad when you tell them to leave you be they need to take you off the list like they said they did and not call you back in five minutes
Deathwing
why is it that every time someone gets called they get pissed at the rep that made the call?

Because the rep chose to work and continue working for that company. Unless i've missed something, nobody forces anybody to work for these scumbags. There are tons of entry-level jobs out there require only slightly more effort, but don't involve you intruding into someone else's privacy - work retail, work at a local school/college, do tech support, deliver pizzas, walk dogs, literally almost anything else out there besides telemarketing.

well its not actually the rep that made the call. it's actually a automated dialer that just happened to connect you to the rep.

This is about the only thing I agree with, though it doesn't excuse anything.

as a rep myself i get tired of people taking out their anger on me when in reality it's a chosen company that they do business with that is who should feel the brunt of the anger.

As the current meme goes, O RLY? 9 times out of 10, this is not a matter of a company people have done business with calling them, it's a matter of a organization they've never heard of and never asked to be contacted by trying to get money from them somehow.

the next time you get a call that you don't want, if you are simply civil with the rep it will get you a lot farther then getting pissed at them.

Yeah, I tried that with the last poor bastards that called me (Capital Financial, 727-230-1333), and it didn't work.

Call #1: I had received a call from their number on my cellphone Weds. night - when I answered the obviously auto-dialed call, there was about 5 seconds of dead air, then it hung up. I couldn't find anything on the number, and they didn't call back that night, so I went on my way.

Call #2: I get another call from the same number around lunchtime the next day that goes to my cell's voicemail, with no message. I call back, and get a rep who I ask to take my name off their list. After some BS that they don't actually have a list, some other company (that they wouldn't name) asked them to call me, etc., he asks for my name and number to stop the calls. When I ask if I can just give them the number without my name, he mumbles something and hangs up. Couldn't clearly catch the name of the company.

Call #3: I call back immediately, and get a different rep. Making sure to get the name of the company this time, I ask again to be taken off the list. After some blatant rudeness and a WTF moment with him telling me they can't take 500 people off the phones at the same time to remove me from the list, I bite the bullet and give him my name and number to be taken off at some undefined point.

Call #4: I get home from work that day, and they call yet again, hanging up when I try to answer. I call back again, stating angrily once more that I want them to leave me alone. After yet more condescending rudeness, blatant lies that I MUST have applied for a card with them or a partner (they wouldn't tell me any names) somewhere, several repeats by me that auto-dialer calls to cellphones are illegal, and the same bizarre line about not being able to take their entire staff off the phones at once to remove me....I am promised that the calls will stop.

Nothing again so far, but I won't be suprised in the least if I get another call on Monday. With any luck the complaints I filed with the FTC and their phone company (XO Communications) will help ensure that.

then take the issue up with the affinity that you do business with that had them make the call. just a thought from a telemarketer.

Yeah, maybe.

If they're not lying in the first place about you doing business with someone. And they truthfully tell you who they're calling on behalf of. And if you can get that company to admit they sold your information and tell the telemarketer to stop. And if the telemarketer will actually listen and stop calling.

It really boils down to, again - if you're tired of putting up with the crap that telemarketers get, DON'T WORK FOR ONE. The vast majority of them deserve exactly what they get.

well lets see you find me an entry level job delievering pizzas making 1o bucks per hour +, and i'll gladly take the job. Can't find one can you? If you ever had to take a day in the life of any of the reps on the phone from a reputable company then everyone would know what i'm talking about. i don't uphold any asshole companies that do the things that you say they do. i'm positive that it happens. please try to remember if you ever put down a cell number (or home number)for any sort of app and don't check the box that says "do not solicit" its inevitable you will get called. i sympathize with you that these junk companies do harass you. but some of the clients that i have called for have absolutely called their customers to death, and i've saw some of the companies listed on these boards. look legit companies exists i've worked for them and yes i've worked retail (wal-mart) which is the biggest junk company in the world, and until quality jobs with decent pay shows up then this is never going to end. show me an entry level job my IT education will get me in WV and i'll be there in a second. until then just think sometimes before going crazy at someone you dont even know.

well lets see you find me an entry level job delievering pizzas making 1o bucks per hour +, and i'll gladly take the job. Can't find one can you?

Riiiiiight, because there couldn't possibly be any other jobs that pay $10/hour+.

You didn't say how much you made, so it was more of a general example. I don't imagine it's all that far-fetched, depending on where you live, though - I know of grocery store clerks around here that make more than $10/hour, for example.

Personally, i'm making quite a bit more than $10/hour in an IT job now, and I haven't even been out of college a year yet .

If you ever had to take a day in the life of any of the reps on the phone from a reputable company then everyone would know what i'm talking about.

I worked phone support for TurboTax during tax season last year, and could probably easily match you in quality of customer insanity, if not quantity. It was customers calling us (what a concept!), though, not marketing.

That aside, the point is - if you are invading someone's privacy making purely unsolicited calls, or calls based on "permission" from a tiny box hidden on a form that someone forgot to check....Then you are not working for a reputable company, plain and simple.

please try to remember if you ever put down a cell number (or home number)for any sort of app and don't check the box that says "do not solicit" its inevitable you will get called.

Ah yes, the lovely logic of the telemarketers and spammers....If you didn't specifically tell us not to flood you with crap, then you must want it!

and until quality jobs with decent pay shows up then this is never going to end. show me an entry level job my IT education will get me in WV and i'll be there in a second. until then just think sometimes before going crazy at someone you dont even know.

If you're in an area that makes your education useless, or the pay scale is incredibly low for IT jobs, then perhaps you should think about moving. I moved 3 states away from where I went to school to be in the job market i'm in now, and other people in my graduating class spread out all over the country.

Somehow I doubt you really care all that much about the side effects of what you're doing to go to that much trouble, though, with the way you're trying to justify things.

Everyone's position is based on their own unique experiences. Arguing with someone that their position is incorrect tends not to work because you both are seeing different sides of the situation, and are basing your positions on different data.

It's very possible that he can't get a decent paying job in his area other than telemarketing, and equally possible that he could just walk across the street and get a better job. It depends on the local situation and how well he is informed of his local options. It's also possible he can't relocate, for whatever reason.

Pointing the person towards monster.com and other websites would probably do more to get them out of the telemarketing industry than arguing with them about a decision they have made in their past or what opportunities they may or may not have available to them.

My experience has been that most people would benefit from trying harder to get a better job, but it's possible that is the best opportunity he has available to him.

I'm not saying I think he should be doing it, just that there are probably better ways to get him to stop.

I'm sure we could get into a big tangential thread about this, but seems to me that proving the other person's position on a topic is wrong is pretty much one of the major goals of any argument or debate.

Well, if he has no other option than to work telemarketing, then that sucks, but I still don't think it gives him the right to justify what he's trying to justify.

Pointing the person towards monster.com and other websites would probably do more to get them out of the telemarketing industry than arguing with them about a decision they have made in their past or what opportunities they may or may not have available to them.

No argument there. One would think this would be obvious, especially to someone that claims to have an IT education, which is why I didn't mention it. I would hope he's tried it already.

My experience has been that most people would benefit from trying harder to get a better job, but it's possible that is the best opportunity he has available to him.

Again, I can feel for him if this is the case - I had to take a crap job doing phone support for 3 months myself to pay the rent -, but it doesn't give him any right to tell other people to stop complaining just because he has no other choice.

I'm not saying I think he should be doing it, just that there are probably better ways to get him to stop.

No offense to you, but if he didn't want people to argue with him, he shouldn't have posted here. If he thought posting on an anti-telemarketing board to tell people not to harass the poor abused telemarketers wasn't going to draw any opposing comments....Then he's either incredibly naive or incredibly blind.

I would slit my wrist if the only job I could get was telemarketing, no way would it ever happen. What a loser job to stalk and harrass people at their homes, and usually for a dishonest scam that results in stealing some poor guys hard earned money. There is no way I would let my DOG take such a job. Telemarketers are losers..they are no better than drunks sleeping in the streets. Get an education and a real job, there is no excuse for such low life employment.
someone who is not a telemarkete

Omnedon, I'm sorry to challenge you, but you're wrong. They won't stop just because you ask them to, nor if you advise them that you're on the DNC list. They're doing whatever they want because they can. I know - I've been getting calls daily for 3 years and I've tried numerous tactics, from reasoning with them, to asking politely for information (they hang up), to blowing a whistle in their ear. I didn't answer calls that appeared on my display with odd area codes for about 6 months - made no difference.

They don't stop, period. I have no sympathy whatsoever for any telemarketers because they're breaking the law. The sooner they're dealt with the better.

You do have to be specific about what you want, you want them to put you on their do-not-call list. You do need to stay calm. (Blowing a whistle in their ear will just piss them off and your time is probably more valuable than theirs, they don't have anything better to do than play with you.) And if they continue to call you, you do need to sue them.

Look at it this way, maybe they will keep calling. At $500 a pop, let them call. Personally, I've never had to sue them, they always stop. But if they don't, take the money and run.

All I can tell you is that I've never bothered to sign up for any do-not-call lists, as I'm perfectly capable of handling it myself. I don't get calls anymore. I don't doubt that if I move again, I'll have to start the whole process over again to clean up the new number, but it's just part of moving.

You need to follow your plan every time they call. Don't get creative, it just fuels their desire to play with people who get their attention.

P.S. I made $42,000 last year, sitting at a nice air-conditioned desk for a total of 1650 hours - or $25.00 an hour. And I was at the beach by 4:00 pm daily. I REALLY can't stress how wrong you "IT TECHS" are about telemarketing and sales in general...but I'm sure you have some IMPORTANT data (porn) to BE TECHIN', RIGHT?

Although I do appreciate the smile you brought me with your capital-letter blustering, protestations, and cursing.

It's simply a matter of time, the law's on our side. Unless you're exceptional, you break the law every time you go to work. Personally, I don't have a problem with telemarketers, per se. It's only when they blatantly ignore the law that I'll step in.

Now run along little fella - you bore me and I'm sure you have some laws to break or people to bully.

Boy you're easy to goad!

I'd rather be 'pseudo-intellectual' than resort to the classless 'Go fuck yourself' because of a vocabulary that was sorely lacking.

btw, if you had an intelligence that could pick up on the subtle, rather than simply the coarse, you would know that 'little man' has nothing to do with the physical dimension.

And now, I'll take my leave and allow you plenty of space to rant. I've allowed myself to be pulled down to your level. I'm not in the habit of hurling insults at my fellow humankind, and I've disappointed myself.

So good day, Sir. I truly hope you can find peace within rather than the volcanic anger you spew.

PERSONALLY - I THINK IT'S OBVIOUS THAT DEATHWING IS A PASTY, QUIET, DATELESS PAIN IN THE PARTY ASS...

Married, sorry. And....pasty? After the insane amount of sun last summer? Surely you jest.

If I left people like you alone, I wouldn't get to read all the wonderfully amusing comments, now would I? I've been ranted and whined at by people far more creative than you, little man. Keep trying, though, you'll perfect those flaming skills someday :)

Funny, that. After I pushed back, including getting an acknowledgement by the FCC, the marketers folded. Haven't gotten a single call since.

why is it that every time someone gets called they get pissed at the rep that made the call?

Probably because you are intruding on their Constitutional right to privacy, interfering with the enjoyment of life etc. all so you can make a buck. Get a real job abd you won't have that problem.

QUOTE(guest_telemarketer @ Nov 9 2005, 11:05 PM)
well its not actually the rep that made the call.  it's actually a automated dialer that just happened to connect you to the rep.  as a rep myself i get tired of people taking out their anger on me when in reality it's a chosen company that they do business with that is who should feel the brunt of the anger

Unfortunately it's you that is harassing people at home for a paycheck. Would you rather they find out where you work and live and return the favor?

QUOTE(guest_telemarketer @ Nov 9 2005, 11:05 PM)
the next time you get a call that you don't want, if you are simply civil with the rep it will get you a lot farther then getting pissed at them. then take the issue up with the affinity that you do business with that had them make the call.  just a thought from a telemarketer

For one thing, the vast majority of calls are cold calls from companies people have never done business with. So the calls are illegal in the first place if the people are on the DNC list, which many of them are.

Secondly, since you chose to "work" in a field that is composed mostly of people who are too lazy to get a real job, who routinely engage in fraudulent business practices and who seem to have no problems adopting the attitude that they have a right to invade your privacy and harass you without fear of retaliation, deal with the problems you brought on yourself or get a real job.

I dream of the day I trace a telemarketer down and get to have some fun with him or her. In fact, I just found out that I can sue telemarketers in any state in Iowa Small Claims Court, which is a fairly cheap filing fee, and that with each filing, the court can require the defendant to post a bond or freeze assets to insure they pay the price of their crimes since the damages sought are statuatory and the fact that they called a number on the DNC registry is sufficient proof to obtain a judgement for those damages.

Additonally, the judge can order a hearing on every motion made by either party and compell the parties to attend. So a telemarketer in Florida would be having fun driving to Iowa a few times before they find their bank account emptied. And of course I'll have the added benefit of seeing some of these trash talking vermin face to face.

Who knows, maybe you'll be the first one.

It really doesn't make sense to show a lot of emotion when you get called, just ask them to take you off their list, put you on their do-not-call list, however you want to phrase it.

So basically when confronted with a person who is breaking the law by calling you, we should fear further (illegal) retaliation from them if we're not polite to a criminal? That's a good one. If they retaliate it just racks up more damages the court will award you.

I just had a go around with Fidelity Credit Services again, they threatened to file a complaint against me, I encouraged them to and I really hope they do. Since they obviously are experts at the law, they should be able to explain to why one of their reps told me my call was being recorded, and then switched to a supervisor who told me I was illegally recording the call his subordinate just told me they were recording.

I should be nice to morons like that?

"Ok - I've seen enough of this stupid shit.

HERE'S THE DEAL - FROM A 10 YEAR VET..."

Shoo .. go away little man.

And I mean - live - on here - with a JAVA-based conference plug-in that I can set up for FREE FOR YOU...since you oBVIOUSLY believe we all want to get into YOUR smelly wallet.

You stand respectfully challenged by a 10 year vet of TELEMARKETING - AND I LOVE IT - AND I WILL NEVER CHANGE CAREERS EVER.

You people are under the impression that you can go to the mat with people YOU GAVE YOUR NUMBER TO...EITHER DIRECTLY OR BY NOT RESEARCHING THE ENTITY YOU WERE GIVING INFORMATION TO.

SORRY ABOUT YOUR LUCK.

AS IF!!!

I NEVER GET CALLS - YA KNOW WHY??? I DON'T FILL OUT FORMS WILLY-NILLY WHENEVER I SEE BRIGHT SHINY STUFF...IN OTHER WORDS, I AM NOT AN IMPETUOUS CHILD GETTING MAD THAT BAD MAN SOLD ME ALL THAT COTTON CANDY THAT MADE ME SICK.

YOU PEOPLE ARE LIKE THE IDIOTS THAT SUE THE TOBACCO COMPANIES AFTER LAUGHING AT THE WARNINGS FOR 40 YEARS...

WHAT'S NEXT - SUING BLACK&DECKER BECAUSE THERE WAS NO "DO NOT HIT YOURSELF IN HEAD WITH BANDSAW!" WARNING?

CHRIST - GET A LIFE...AREN'T THERE ANY CRACKHEADS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD THAT NEED HELP? OR PROSTITUTES SPREADING REAL DISEASE?

MAYBE WHEN YOU'RE DONE WITH US, YOU CAN GO GET SOME LIFE SENTENCES FOR SOME POT SMOKERS TOO!

I'm sorry - I had a quick question...are YOU the head of the HATE SALESPEOPLE forum here? Because I would VERY much like to have a "NO-HOLDS BARRED" DEBATE about your PARTICULARLY vehement attitude towards your brand of ANTI-AMERICAN and ANTI FREE-ENTERPRISE RHETORIC.

I'm curious...are you..like.. a skin-head or something else Anti-American? I would debate with you anytime. You are so full of anger and rage that you probably feel a great relief duping real Americans. Gee..Whatcha think of our men and woman in uniform protecting your right to harass people. Bet it gives you a real kick...but not the kind you need.

By the way - on EVERY call made to a member of our armed forces...I THANK THEM PROFUSELY for ALLOWING us to keep being AMERICAN CAPITOLISTS.

When was the last time you PERSONALLY thanked one?

Ever wonder what people really think about telemarketers? Here is a funny website that you can download audio clips from. These are REAL telemarketing calls. The people who answer the phone are just "playing" around with the agent who is selling them something. It is REALLY funny and worth listening to. Just scroll down to the near bottom of the webpage and you will see it titled "Terrorizing Telemarketers". lol When you click on the MP3 link you will have to wait about 30 seconds for the clip to download. You'll see an arrow on the bottom left hand corner of your computer screen with a little box showing you it's downloading.

Click below and take a listen. THESE ARE NOT FAKE CALLS.

Comedy

Jim Florentine is the guy from the show Crank Yankers and he has his own website making fun of people who call. Enjoy!
