I only started keeping track of the dates and times of my calls on 7/18/06, but as of today I've had 32 calls from companies trying to sell me prescription drugs. 20 of those calls were from 866-887-0838. I have asked several times to be placed on their do not call list, have asked for a copy of their policy (never received it), and every time I've asked for the company address I've been hung up on. They'll give me the name of a company, but it's always something different. I think that the calls are outsourced somewhere outside of the U.S., as the telemarketers always have a hispanic accent.

How can I find out who owns these phone numbers, especially the one that's called me 20 times? This is beyond ridiculous and I'm on the verge of changing my number just so I can get them off my back. It's not uncommon for me to receive 4 - 5 calls a day from these people. mad.gif

The best way to get information is to "con" (confidence) your way to it. All good "cons" play on the greed of the party being conned. Call the number and convince them that you really, REALLY, want their services, in fact, you really *need* their services. Convince them that you REALLY want to buy their services BUT you're afraid of identity theft because your best friend or relative just went through that when they gave out their visa card number, checking account number, etcetera on the phone. Ask them if they can provide you with some way to independently (independent of their assurances that they are legitimate) verify who they really are. Are they listed in the BBB? Do they have a www site? What is their registered business name and in what State is the name registered? What is their actual address?

You should be able to call your local long distance service provider and ask them who is the "responsible organization" (RespOrg) for 866-887-0838. Then you can call the RespOrg for 866-887-0838 and ask them if they can tell you who they bill for that number. If they won't tell you, then you may need to file a civil complaint against "John Doe" for the TCPA violations in a court that allows you to file against a "John Doe" and allows you to send a subpoena, and then send a subpoena to the RespOrg for the subscriber to 866-887-0838.

Report back what you find out....

You will never, and I mean never get them to stop. NEVER.

Do not waste your time listening to worthless suggestions from people who have not gone through this phone rape – and that's exactly what it is, a form of rape. Because when you tell someone to stop doing something and they keep doing it against your will, that is the very definition of rape! And the mental anguish of non-stop, unwanted, harassing calls is a form of mild torture.

Those who have not gone through this nightmare will tell you all sorts of things that don't work, such as:
  • Asking them to put you on their "Do Not Call List" (They don't have one! They are criminals, not legitimate businesses.)
  • Tell them ther party they are trying to reach doesn't live there anymore. (They don't care about the name of the person. They have the number and they will continue to call it regardless of who owns the number.)
  • Lie to them by telling them you are some sort of law enforcement agent or that you are recording the calls. (Even if they believed you, they know they can't be touched in their country.)
  • Reporting them to this or that government agency. (The government does not investigate or care about individual cases such as yours.)
  • Asking the phone company to block the calls. (They won't do it because they are toll-free numbers.)
  • Putting your name on the national Do Not Call list. (This does not work because the calls come from foreign countries and besides, there are absolutely no enforcement provisions for violators of the list.)

You have only 3 options:
  • Accept it and continue getting the calls non-stop for years (and YES, they will last for years!)
  • Change your phone number. (My only problem with this, was that the poor sap who got my old number would now start getting the calls, and I could not morally do that to any human being!)
  • Or get something like a Caller ID Manager.

I am not connected with this product or any company selling it. I am just telling you (and others on similar boards who are going through the same thing), from one person to another who has gone through this nightmare, that after over a year of non-stop harassing calls, and trying EVERYHTING short of changing my phone number, this is the ONLY thing that worked. Period!

This device has its pros and cons. Here they are:
PRO
  • You can block any specific number from ever ringing through
  • You can block any number based just on its area code, including any toll-free number by blocking based on the first 3 digits, such as 800, 866, 877, 888, etc. This is h elpful as they change the last 7 digits quite often, but there are only a limited number of toll-free prefixes - and ALL can be blocked!
  • You can block private calls from ringing through.
  • Any private call from a legitimate person you may know can still go to your answering machine/service to leave you a message.
CON
  • Any number (including any number you block) "rings" silently the first few rings until the device determines if it is a blocked number or an allowed number. This results in your phone sometimes only ringing out loud once or twice on "allowed" calls before it goes to your answering machine or service. Sometimes you may not get to the phone in time.
  • The thing costs a hefty $100.
You can weigh the pros and cons yourself to see if it is worth you getting one. All I can say is that it is the best investment I have made in a long time and it has stopped 99% of the calls! And that 1% or so that gets through always gets added onto the blocked calls!

Good luck!

I'm going through the same exact thing, except I get about 10-15 calls per day for the past two months. This is as far as I can get so far: The company name is Securehealthnetwork.com. They are based in New York, NY...but nobody will give me a valid address - when I "google earth" the addresses I have been given, it shows vacant parking lots, or better yet, one of the addresses was the World Trade Center (yup, the one that was blown up.)

These are the people, employee ID#s, and their roles within the company: Lenin #108 works the night shift. Ivan #503 works the day shift. Junior is the day shift supervisor, will not provide me with a Employee #, and refuses to give me a mailing address. "They will get fired if they provide a mailing address." Junior's supervisor is Jamie. He's the operations manager. No known employee number. His boss is the president of the company. They are not allowed to give out the name of the President either.

These are the alleged addresses:
1375 105th Street
New York, NY

7 World Trade Center, Suite 23
New York, NY 10013

100 Center St., Suite 2620
New York, NY

In order to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau you need an address. I'm awaiting a response from the BBB to hear if I can file a complaint with the information I have.

I have an update for all people experienceing the numerous harrassing phone calls from this company, AND HOW TO STOP THE PHONE CALLS!!!! =) I finally got fed up, and this is what I did to get the phone calls to stop. Get all your friends, coworkers, family to call THEM twenty times a day. It's an 866 number, so who cares, right? Ten of us got together and called the company 20 times each...by the time we were done they actually blocked OUR numbers from their system so we couldn't call them anymore. Keep them on the call for 5 minutes or so...just BS with them. Ask their name, employee id number, what address, ask for supervisors, but have fun with it. =) Good times, and no more calls. Payback is a BEEYATCH! Good luck all...! Here's their info in case you want to give it a go:

Hi. I just found this message board doing a Google search to figure out who was repeatedly calling me from 866-887-0838... OK thanks people. Now I know. Another darn telemarketer! Interesting board here. Many thanks. I am glad at least to find I am not alone. I would say I too receive at least 5 telemarketing calls each day - all to my mobile phone. Sometimes I get more, sometimes a bit less. Never a day off. It started to really build up when I got rid of my landline and now just use my mobile for everything. It seemed logical at the time as 95 percent of my calls are made to and from my mobile anyway. Why have two bills and two numbers?

This is when I discovered the snag. Telemarketers were already calling my main home number, but they very rarely leave messages. So I never noticed quite how many calls they made in the course of a day.

Once I went "tellular" (mobile phone only) the telemarketers followed. Being a mobile phone, my number is unlisted (and is on the federal do not call list). It makes no difference. My best guess as to how they get my number is that I do frequently buy items I need on the Internet. I donlt think I am unusual in that regard. It is very convenient. Anything from videotapes to electronics to printer cartridges. Sometimes I may be taking a small chance and dealing with merchants who I don't know. Paying by credit card gives me fiscal protection and, in fact, I have actually never been ripped off. I have always chosen carefuly and received quality goods. But I suspect some of these smaller companies may be sleezy and share or sell customer phone numbers. When paying by credit card, one has to give the phone number associated with the account. In my case it is my mobile.

The telemarketers vary a little, but the most common is offering to sell prescription drugs without need to see a doctor. This is flat out illegal in itself, not to mention dangerous and irresponsible - assuming they would deliver the goods at all. If the medication offered is a controlled substance, it is matter which falls under the authority of the Drug Enforcement Agency and should be reported (if any one knows of a specific DEA hotline or official website to report these rogues to I would love to know about it please.

I suspect the majority of these calls come from overseas, I would like to stress this is not due to any prejudice on my part towards the good people of other nations. These rogues are to be found worldwide and we have our own homegrown share in the USA. The reasons I think most of the calls come from overseas are various, and accents is the least of the reasons. The US is a very multi-ethnic society and many of us have accents of all kinds here. My reasons are, firstly, moving the call centers overseas may be an effort to circumvent the do-not call legislation. If they are not calling from the US, they may be exempt from some US laws, or at least very hard to stop. Secondly, I see a lot of falsified incoming caller IDs. Some obviously fake, things like +1 (02, some are better efforts at masquerading as a local number. But if one talks to the caller and asks where there are located, they will often pause, ask a supervisor, then come back on and mention a US State. If asked for a City, another pause, they ask advice, then come back and give a local city. Ask them which street, and they will generally give up... they don't know the area at all. I have read up a little on this issue of generating fake caller IDs and it seems quite complicated, requiring access to special technology and know-how, and it is almost certainly highly illegal. It necessarilly involves complicity with a telephone service provider offering a point of entry into the telephone system, whether through carelessnes or intent, and one who will allow (or not actively stop) the caller from using special equipment to transmit fake packets of caller ID info. This could happen in US, but my feeling is that the telephone industry is quite highly regulated here, so these rogue callers need to find a weak spot somewhere else. I do also notice delays and echos which suggest International calling and Voice Over Internet in particular,

I completely agree with the views that there seems to be nothing one can do to stop these callers by talking to them. Although I am very amused by the person who challenged them at their own game, with a relentless barage of calls back, but I personally find most of the numbers I receive are fake and no return call is possble. Engaging with them in any way seems completely fruitless (I have tried) and the incoming caller IDs seem to change every few weeks. Generally, the person making the call seems to be a weary, grossly underpaid individual wading through a list of number the have been instructed to call. They do not seem to keep much in the way of records. I imagine it is like Spam email. Talk to them and you have just confirmed it is a valid number. Don't answer and it will go to voicemail, again confirming it is a valid number. And that poor weary soul making call after call probably for a pitance is hardly the ringleader anyway. I iamgine they just sit there with a long list and call and call all day.

I have seriously considered changing my number and have not ruled that out, but this will cause significant personal inconvenience which will could even affect my livelihood, so many people I work with have my existing number, Plus if I change it, there is no guarantee the marketing calls will not end up following me all over again.

It happens that I use a Windows Mobile Pocket PC PDA Phone (not a sales pitch, just an explanation of how I am trying to cope for now) My best defence has proven to be an inexpensive program called SmartFilter from www.novosec.com. It allows me to block calls from any numbers I choose (the phone does not ring and the caller is sent straight to voicemail. As few telemarketers leave messages this is fairly effective. I bought it from handango.com, which is a software site for handhelds. It comes in versions for both Pocket PC Phones and Windows Smartphones (these are slighlty different and require different variants). I never pick up calls from toll free, private or suspect numbers. If there is a message left I check it and call back. If not, I immediately add the number to my SmartFilter block list. As telemarketer numbers fall out of use I delete them from my list and update it with the current ones. With this strategy I successfully block maybe 80 to 90 percent of the calls from ringing at all. The others I do not answer and then quickly add them to my blocked list.

As many of these callers are selling prescription medications this is clearly illegal and I tend to feel the longer term solution is to involve law enforcement. Having read up about this on the Internet and on the FDA and DEA websites, this had been quite a problem with rogue pharmacies doing this right in the USA. A number have been shutdown and the operators charged with drug trafficing. Other operators try to slide around it by avoiding medicines which are controlled substances so it may become an FDA issue not a DEA issue (more a matter violating ethics and medical regulations than a flat out crimanal case) Still highly irresponsible, but possibly just slighltly more difficult to prosecute.

This may be another reason for the operators to run their wretched businesses from overseas. Nonethelees, the FDA and DEA are most definitely concerned by overseas pharmaces mailing drugs to USA citizens and it is definitely illegal. Identifying and acting to stop them may be challenging. But this is certainly a matter which law enforcement want to stop.

As I mentioned, I would appreciate any links for reporting these types of calls and what type of information might have the most concrete use to law enforcement officials. In the short term, using telephones which can run software to block selected numbers may be helpful (any recommendations would be helpful, my software only works on Windows Mobile and their are many other different phones). And failing that the simplst defence is to simply to never answer numbers you do not recognize.
